Medicinal Mixology came about one night when we were sitting at a bar in New Orleans. Everywhere we looked were neon-colored cocktails full of sugar and artificial ingredients, and that really bothered us. With the renewal of interests in classic cocktails and spirits, it struck us as odd that bars couldn’t seem to part with products that rely on artificial additives. We started to explore local liquor stores and, after many hours, put together an initial list of spirits that are made with the purest ingredients available.
We avoid artificial ingredients because we can. There is no need to consume them. There are affordable, pure, alternative products for all the must-have spirits that contain artificial ingredients. Producers only add artificial ingredients to cut corners, and those are not brands we want to support.
We’ve spent the past several years in the food and beverage industry as servers and bartenders. We’ve lived in San Francisco, New Orleans, and now Portland. We’ve traveled the country with a food & wine group to host farm-to-table dinners, which means we just traveled, ate, drank, traveled, and drank some more. Ironically, we’ve lived in very booze-centric cities. San Francisco and New Orleans both believe themselves to be the birthplace of the cocktail, and Portland’s mixology scene is renowned for pushing the envelope… not to mention all the wonderful booze coming out of Oregon right now.
We are really passionate about food and drinks, and we noticed that no one was really having a discussion about spirits that include artificial additives. We’re not experts, and, for the most part, this site is more of an adventure for us than an attempt to establish a new dogma in the world of craft cocktails. Medicinal Mixology is here to start the conversation. Let’s drink to good health and have a damn fun time doing it.
Thanks for reading.
